Organic Sea Salt, Coarse
Portuguese Traditional Sea Salt "Sel Traditionael de l'Ocean Atlantique"
Sel Traditionel de l'Ocean Atlantique is the Portuguese version of the popular French Grey Sea Salt.
This bulk sea salt is much whiter than the French, as the region experiences far less rainfall. Rainfall and storms cause the clay at the bottom of the salt pools to mingle with the salt and turn it grey.
The great prices on this salt versus the French salt is due to a Portuguese law which requires salt to be processed to a level of 100% pure sodium chloride. Since this salt is hand harvested, it still contains all of its minerals (such as magnesium, iron and calcium, which are particularly good for your health). The presence of these minerals puts it under 96% pure and places it in the law's number three category for salt--the kind that you dump on roads to prevent freezing. This law is being petitioned for change. Until that happens, you have the opportunity to buy this high quality salt for far less than the French variety. This pricing is not likely to continue on for long. So, if you like this bulk sea salt, you might want to stock up now.
Salt farmers in Portugal adhere to quality standards for certified organic produce and consequently have been awarded the "Slow Food Award for the Defense of Biodiversity."
Just so you are aware, this is a wet sea salt not meant to be put in a regular salt grinder. It is usually used as is, as the grain size is not that large. If you do want to grind it finer, you will need to have a mill that is specially designed for wet salt. We have a version available, see our Peugeot Vendome salt mill.
