Gift Box, Mexican Flavors

The flavors in Mexican cuisine are as varied as the flavors of America, from rich moles and braised meats to the bright flavors of salsa and grilled vegetables. These four seasonings will get you started exploring the incredible cuisines of our Southern neighbor.

Americans have embraced the flavors found in Mexican cooking in a big way. It is great fun to experiment with these flavors at home, and a great way to utilize all the fresh vegetables that are so abundant at your local farmer's markets, or from your own garden. Even your kids will love homemade taco or fajita night.

The packing material in your box can be used for cooking as well: Korintje Indonesian cinnamon sticks, whole nutmeg from Grenada, and Turkish select bay leaves.

Your spicy Mexican flavors included in this box are:

Mixed from flavors found often in Mexican cuisine, this blend makes a very tasty marinade for chicken, beef, pork or turkey. Mix 1-2 tablespoons with 2/3 cup oil and 1/3 cup vinegar. Pour over flank steak and marinate overnight. Add some slices of onion, red & green bell peppers, saute in hot cast iron skillet until done. Mmmm.

Hand mixed from: coarse Kosher salt, pepper, Mexican oregano, garlic, nutmeg, turmeric, celery, paprika, red pepper, coriander, ginger, cumin, white pepper, cinnamon, fenugreek, fennel, arrowroot, cardamom, cloves, oregano, basil, marjoram, rosemary, and thyme.

This blend makes hamburger meat, ground pork or turkey into authentically flavored taco or burrito meat. For one pound of meat simply mix 4 tablespoon taco seasoning into 6 ounces of water. Add to browned beef and cook 10-15 minutes. The sauce is as delicious as a gravy, almost good enough to drink. This blend is family style (not hot). If you want to spice it up, add a few of the jalapeno peppers included in this box.

Hand mixed from: paprika, salt, corn masa, garlic, onion, pepper, cumin, oregano, allspice, cinnamon, red bell peppers, dextrose, tomato powder, and arrowroot.

This is an authentic Mexican spice mixture, full-flavored but not hot, that forms the base for many Mexican recipes. Use 1/2 teaspoon per pound to give meats a South of the Border flavor, add to bean dips or chili. Great in guacamole. Hand-mixed from: onion and garlic powders, black pepper, cumin, and Mexican oregano.

Tex-Mex style chili mixture rich in the normal chili spices, then, enriched by sweet tomato powder and the addition of vegetable bits. Use 1-3 tablespoons per quart of chile. Chile con carne is also great added to salsas or stuffed chile rellanos.

Hand mixed from: sweet ancho chile pepper, paprika, cumin, garlic, Mexican oregano, coriander, minced onions & garlic, sweet red & green chile peppers, celery flakes, arrowroot starch, allspice and cloves.
