Easy and Quick Irish Oats

Irish oats do not need to take a long time to cook, if you follow the technique in this recipe for a flavorful way of making this traditional breakfast dish. My impatience with spending a long time at the stove helped me to find a quick way to make Irish oats.

Easy and Quick Irish Oats Recipe

  • 1/2 cup Irish (steel-cut) oats
  • 2-3 tablespoons dried apple, cut into small pieces
  • 2 tablespoons raisins
  • 2 tablespoons dried cranberries
  • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger nibs
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 2 cups water, as needed

Preparation Instructions

Find a quart container with a lid – a recycled yogurt container works well – and place all dry ingredients and banana (if used). Mix lightly and add the water. Close the container and let stand at room temperature overnight – four hours minimum. To prepare, pour contents of the container into a medium saucepan and cook over a medium / medium-low heat for about fifteen minutes to remove excess water. Continue to cook for several more minutes, if desired.
