Homemade Instant Cinnamon-Raisin Oatmeal Recipe

Homemade Instant Cinnamon-Raisin Oatmeal Notes

I like oatmeal, but don't always have time to make it. I've tried commerically available instant oatmeal, but do not necessarily like the taste. So, I learned to make my own kind from fresh ingredients I have at home. It is fresh-tasting and much less dense and starchy than some of the commercially made instant oatmeal products.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons "quick" oats
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar ( for variety, try vanilla sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon raisins
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • dash of salt
  • 1-2 walnut pieces, broken, optional
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Serves / Yields

1 individual serving

Preparation Instructions

In a plastic sandwich bag or zip-lock “snack” bag, combine all the dry ingredients

Seal each bag and store in a cool, dry place.

When ready to use, place the contents into a cereal bowl and add ½ cup boiling water. Let stand about a minute before it’s ready to eat.

Helpful Hints

Use fresh cinnamon to bring out the flavor, and try different kinds of cinnamon to vary the taste. The Chinese cinnamon is a good starting point, and Ceylon cinnamon is also fine. Saigon or Vietnamese cinnamon has a stronger taste, which I personally like.

This can be a good recipe to prepare with children, since they can work as a team to measure the ingredients and assemble each portion.
