Ukrainian Village Spice
Ukrainian Village Seasoning
Ukrainian Village Seasoning is known as Old Cedarburg Seasoning in our original Milwaukee Spice House location.
This seasoning blend is both flavorful and colorful. Ukrainian Village seasoning is good on any style of chicken: shake on before baking, or mix 2 tablespoons per cup of flour for dredging chicken before frying. Good for almost any type of vegetable, eggs, hamburgers, popcorn, or French fries. Make stale bread into seasoned croutons by cutting it into cubes, tossing in a little oil and then Ukrainian Village Seasoning and baking at 350 degrees until toasted (5-10 minutes).
Pride in our personal heritage was the inspiration for this seasoning. My father's parents immigrated to the United States from the Ukraine, independently, and fifteen years apart. They did not know each other in their homeland. When they met in Canada, they discovered that they had lived within 20 miles of each other in the Ukraine! Trying to make this seasoning authentic, I dredged my memory for the types of food they liked to eat; but my finicky childhood taste buds recalled only plain, thrifty dishes such as chicken neck soup. My grandparents were extremely poor when they first lived in this country, and by the time they could afford to indulge in more expensive tastes, they had come to acquire a desire for the foods with which they once had to "make do." To finish a long story, we created one of our best all-purpose seasonings to honor these brave and hardworking family members.
