Best Gingerbread Cookies Notes

This recipe comes to us from The Junior League of Chicago. It is from their cookbook, "Celebrate Chicago! A Taste of Our Town."

Ingredients

  • 5 cups flour, sifted
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon powdered ginger
  • 1 teaspoon powdered cloves
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar

Serves / Yields

8-10 dozen

Preparation Instructions

Sift flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves together.

Cream shortening and sugar in mixer bowl until light and fluffy. Add egg, molasses and vinegar and beat well. Add flour mixture and mix well.

Chill for 3 hours.

Roll on lightly floured surface. Cut with cookie cutter. Place on nonstick cookie sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 5 to 6 minutes or until browned.
