Black Garlic Chicken

Black Garlic Chicken
This flavorful black garlic chicken recipe benefits from the best of the Asian condiment shelf: umami-packed soy and oyster sauces, sweet hoisin and honey, and a dash of sesame oil for a nutty note. Both regular and fermented black garlic really punch up the flavor profile; be sure to save the delicious pan juices to spoon over steamed rice!

Jar, 1/2 Cup, 2.4 oz.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken, about 4 to 5 pounds, cut up and patted dry (or use 4-5 pounds bone-in chicken parts)
  • Coarse salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, mashed and chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 Tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 2 green onions, chopped, for garnish

Preparation Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.

  2. In a large, ovenproof casserole dish, arrange chicken pieces. Season chicken pieces liberally with salt and pepper, tossing to evenly coat. Set aside.

  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, regular and black garlic, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, honey, hoisin sauce, and Aleppo pepper. Pour over chicken pieces and toss to coat well.

  4. Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes. Raise heat to broil at 450°F. Broil until chicken is browned in places (take care not to burn), about 10 minutes. Baste with some of the pan juices, turn and broil until other side is browned, about 10 more minutes. Reduce heat to 325°F and bake until chicken is cooked through, about 20 minutes more, basting at least once more.

  5. Remove chicken to platter. De-fat pan juices and check seasonings, adding more salt, sauces or honey as needed. Pour over chicken. Garnish with chopped green onions if desired and serve immediately.

I want to use this recipe for Christmas Eve but replace the chicken with a 6lb duck… Crossing my fingers!

So delicious – a family regular!

I made this recipe because I love Black Garlic and I am always looking for more recipes to use it in. This is one of the best chicken recipes that I have ever used. The chicken was cooked perfect and the flavor was perfect. I followed the recipe almost to the letter. I added 3 extra cloves of Black Garlic and a extra clove of plain garlic. My family loves garlic and it was perfect for us. Even my husband loved it and he is a Beef eater. Thank you so much for this delicious recipe.

Fabulous recipe! We enjoyed it with rice, as suggested for the first night. We chopped up the leftovers and used them in a Chinese Chicken Salad. It was heavenly! The kitchen smelled marvelous as the chicken was cooking. I highly recommend this recipe!

This was an easy, fun recipe to make. There are some unusual ingredients for when you’re craving something different. I added a few sliced crimini mushrooms & some chopped red & green peppers (because they needed to get used up!). I served it with Japanese curly noodles and corn for a ramen sort of dish.
