English cuisine is the butt of many a bad food joke, and not without some truth. But some of our ultimate comfort foods trace their roots to hearty English fare, and modern English cooking embraces quality ingredients and diverse ethnic influences. From spotted dick to toad-in-the-hole, English food can be great with the right ingredients.
There is a communication of more than our bodies when bread is broken and wine is drunk. And that is my answer when people ask me: Why do you write about hunger, and not wars or love.
