Frequently Asked Questions
What are the exact measurements for one mug?
Use one pat of butter (about 1 tablespoon), 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, and one shot of rum (about 1.5 ounces). Fill the rest of the mug with boiling water, stir, and taste. Adjust any ingredient to suit your preference.
Can I make a non-alcoholic version?
Yes. Replace the rum with hot apple cider, hot water, or a nonalcoholic rum substitute. The drink still tastes rich and cozy. Some people call it Hot Buttered Rumless.
How do I prepare a batter or mix ahead of time?
Make a batter by blending softened butter, brown sugar, and pumpkin spice into a paste. Portion into spoons or a jar and refrigerate for up to 1 week or freeze for longer. For a dry mix, combine brown sugar and spice in a jar and add butter when serving.
What type of rum works best?
Dark or spiced rum adds the richest flavor. Light rum works if you prefer a milder taste. Choose based on how strong and spiced you want the final drink.
How can I make this vegan or dairy free?
Use a vegan butter or coconut oil in place of butter. Vegan margarine keeps the creamy texture. Note that coconut oil will add a subtle coconut flavor.
Why does the butter separate and how do I stop it?
If the butter floats, stir vigorously or whisk to emulsify the fat into the hot liquid. Using a warm mug and dissolving the sugar first helps the butter blend smoothly.
Can I make a large batch for a party?
Yes. Multiply the base amounts per serving and warm the combined mix in a pot without boiling. Keep the alcohol separate and let guests add a shot to their cup. Or add rum to the whole pot if you prefer.

I tried the recipe exactly as it was written and it was quite good.
Though I altered it a bit and added 2 shots of rum and used honey instead of brown sugar to sweeten it and it was even better!
