What is the Flatpack?
The Flatpack is fresh spices with free shipping—always. Whether you need a single spice or hundreds of spices, shipping is always free, to US addresses, with the Flatpack. Each Flatpack contains a half cup of spice by volume, which makes the Flatpack a great option for refilling your half cup spice jars (note that the jars will be slightly larger than a measured half cup and Flatpacks will not fully top off the jars). What shipping materials do you use?
We use 100% recyclable materials in our shipping materials. Jars ride in custom-made inserts to protect them from the violence of shipping. All shipping materials collapse with minimal effort for easy recycling.
Do you store my payment information?
No. All credit card information is processed securely by Shopify Payments. The Spice House does not store—and cannot access—your credit card information. Only your last four digits will be retained in our records in compliance with the credit card services we accept for payment.
In addition to all major credit cards, we also accept PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. We use two-factor authentication to enhance the security of every transaction. Orders are charged in full at the time of purchase.
What is your return policy?
It is our goal for customers to be completely satisfied with their spice purchases.
For our in-store customers, we are happy to accept a return for a refund within 30 days, with the original receipt, provided the packaging remains intact and sealed, without signs of tampering.
Online customers can contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be happy to assist you with the return process.
Do you offer gift cards?
We offer both Physical Gift Cards which are mailed to your recipient, and we have Virtual Gift Cards which are emailed to you, the gift-giver, to forward to your recipient. Our Gift Cards are available in denominations of $25.00, $50.00, $100.00, and $150.00
How do I redeem a gift card (physical or virtual)?
You can pay with a gift card on our checkout payment page. When you checkout you'll add your address details, then choose your shipping option, and then on the payment page you can enter the number on the back of your card.
**NOTE** Our newer cards have a 16-character number to enter but our older cards have a 21-digit number. Our site was updated in 2019 and the gift card field only accepts 20 characters. So, if you have one of the older cards, only enter the first 20 digits (leave off the last digit).
Why isn’t my promotion or discount code working?
If you received your discount code from one of our emails, be sure to check the rules of use and minimum purchase requirements stated in the email.
If you received your code from a 3rd-party marketing site, those services often present false or expired discount codes to lure you in to get your shopping data to sell to other retailers. Sometimes they harvest our real discount codes and present them, but often they will share illegitimate codes in an attempt to get more clicks/data.

Are your spices kosher?
We are proud to bring you a wide selection of kosher-certified spices. Our website and store locations now offer spices, herbs, and seasonings produced under the observance and blessing of Rabbi Akiva Freilich and the Kosher Supervisors of Wisconsin.

What is the best way to store spices?
Spices should be stored in airtight containers. Our jars and bags are good if they are properly stored. Air, heat, and light are the enemies of fresh spices. A dark cabinet or drawer will do. The worst place to keep your spices is above the stove because heat from the oven will destroy essential oils in the spices.
How are the spices packed?
We offer glass jars and resealable bags.
- Jars are sealed with foil to lock in flavor and lock out moisture. The easiest way to remove the foil seal is to puncture it with a butter knife and peel it off the jar. The cap is metal and stamped with our logo.
- Bags are recycled Japanese kraft paper on the outside and high quality BPA-free laminate on the inside. We seal our bags before shipping to you. You can reseal with the zipper. Use scissors to make a clean cut above the zipper and below our seal.

Do spices expire?
Spices will lose flavor and color over time, as their volatile oils (from where the aromas and flavors derive) evaporate, but spoiling is not a concern for a majority of our products (exceptions: cheese powders/blends and sesame seeds are recommended to be replaced each year). We do recommend that you use our spices within 6 months to a year for optimal flavor. If your spices are moving beyond the year mark, you're still fine to use them, but you'll find that you're using more to match the original flavor punch.
Fresh spices, ground and blended in small batches, are our calling card, so you have our assurance that nothing you buy from us will ever have been sitting on a shelf for months.

Where are your stores located and what are their hours?
You can find our store locations and hours of operation here.
Can I place an order for pick up at a store?
You can place an order for free pickup at our Chicago store on Wells Street, our Evanston store on Central Street, and our Milwaukee Store on Old World 3rd Street. Place your order online and select "Pick Up" as the delivery method at checkout. You will receive an email when your order is prepared. Please give us 3 to 4 hours to fill your order. We hold pickup orders for 10 days. Any order not picked up after 10 days will be refunded.
Can I add items to/change items in my order?
Since we do not retain your payment information, for your online security, we are not able to add items to an existing order. You can place a new order for the items you wish to add. If you are looking to remove items for a refund, please contact us at email@example.com.
