We offer glass jars and resealable bags.
- Jars are sealed with foil to lock in flavor and lock out moisture. The easiest way to remove the foil seal is to puncture it with a butter knife and peel it off the jar. The cap is metal and stamped with our logo.
- Bags are recycled Japanese kraft paper on the outside and high quality BPA-free laminate on the inside. We seal our bags before shipping to you. You can reseal with the zipper. Use scissors to make a clean cut above the zipper and below our seal.
What is the Flatpack?
The Flatpack is fresh spices with free shipping—always. Whether you need a single spice or hundreds of spices, shipping is always free with the Flatpack. Each Flatpack contains a half cup of spice by volume, which makes the Flatpack a great option for refilling your half cup spice jars. Can I place an order for pick up at a store?
You can place an order for free pickup at our Chicago store on Wells Street, our Evanston store on Central Street, and our Milwaukee Store on Old World 3rd Street. Place your order online and select "Store Pickup" in the shipping menu at checkout. You will receive an email when your order is prepared. We require 24 hours notice on all pickup orders.
What shipping materials do you use?
We use 100% recyclable materials in our shipping materials. Jars ride in custom-made inserts to protect them from the violence of shipping. All shipping materials collapse with minimal effort for easy recycling.
Do you store my payment information?
No. All credit card information is processed securely by Shopify Payments. The Spice House does not store—and cannot access—your credit card information. In addition to all major credit cards, we also accept PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. We use two-factor authentication to enhance the security of every transaction.
We do not sell, rent, or share your contact information with anybody for any reason.
What is your return policy?
It is our goal for customers to be completely satisfied with their spice purchases. We are happy to accept a return for a refund within 30 days, with the original receipt, provided the packaging remains intact and sealed, without signs of tampering. Returns without a receipt may receive store credit. Please contact us and we will be happy to assist you with the return process.
What is the best way to store spices?
Spices should be stored in airtight containers. Our jars and bags are good if they are properly stored. Air, heat, and light are the enemies of fresh spices. A dark cabinet or drawer will do. The worst place to keep your spices is above the stove because heat from the oven will destroy essential oils in the spices.
How long do spices last?
Whole spices can last several years. Once spices are ground, their volatile oils are released and begin to dissipate. We recommended frequent purchases of smaller qualities to assure maximum freshness. Old spices will not make you sick, but they will be less tasty. A good, simple test is to smell them. If you do not get a scent, then it is time to throw them away. A fun way to retire old spices is to toss them on a charcoal grill. This releases the last little bit of volatile oils and adds flavor to your grilling.
Why do your labels say “organically sourced” and not “organic”?
Our organically sourced products are cultivated and cleaned according to organic standards. These spices are produced in full accordance to organic standards but cannot bear a certified organic label because our facility is not certified for organic production.
Are your spices kosher?
Our Milwaukee store is certified kosher by the Kosher Supervisors of Wisconsin. Customers seeking spices with rabbinical kosher certification should place their orders via our website and add a note during checkout requesting kosher spices. Additionally, you can call the Milwaukee Spice House and place orders with them directly. They can be reached at 414-272-0977.
Are your spices irradiated?
We purchase non-irradiated spices whenever possible. 95% of our products have not been irradiated, however, an irradiated product is sometimes our only option. More information in irradiation is available on the FDA’s website.
Are your spices gluten free?
Yes. We carry a small number of products that contain gluten:
- Classic French Demi Glace
- Redi-Base Beef Stock
- Redi-Base Chicken Stock
Each of these come to us prepackaged so there is no risk of cross-contamination.

As the country became concerned about MSG we removed it from almost all of our blends. However, MSG is a flavor enhancer that does make things taste better. A few of our blends still contain MSG:
