Perfect Turkey Burgers

Juicy turkey burgers with BBQ, Parmesan, and simple tips to keep patties moist and intact. Grill or pan fry and baste for best flavor.

Perfect Turkey Burgers
This is a personal favorite since I don't eat red meat but love a good burger! I've developed this one over time and found that everyone loves it!

Submitted by: Jerri from Chicago, IL
Yield: 4 1/4 lb. burgers

  • Mix lean turkey with BBQ, Worcestershire, Parmesan, breadcrumbs, garlic, and herbs. Form 4 patties.
  • Season patties, grill or pan fry until internal temp reaches 165°F, and baste with remaining BBQ near the end.
  • Use cheese, herbs, and toppings to add flavor. Chill patties and use binder ingredients to prevent them falling apart.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean, ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup barbeque sauce (choose your favorite)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • to taste, salt and pepper

Preparation Instructions:

Mix all the ingredients (except 1/4 cup of bbq sauce, Milwaukee Ave Steak Seasoning, and salt and pepper) together with your hands and form 4 equal size patties. Top each patty with salt, pepper, and most importantly, Milwaukee Ave Steak Seasoning.

Grill or pan fry. The grated cheese and breadcrumbs help to hold the burgers together on the grill. As the burgers are grilling (approximately 20 minutes) baste them with the remaining bbq sauce.

Delicious!

More About This Recipe

You can also top your burger with your favorite cheese (feta, cheddar, provolone) about 4-5 minutes before they are finished cooking. Serve with fresh tomato, avocado, grilled onion, extra bbq sauce, etc. Fresh chopped basil or cilantro also add great flavor to the burger mix. You can play with the measurements, because I am a cook that rarely measures a thing. I do everything by sight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What internal temperature should turkey burgers reach?

Cook turkey burgers to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Use an instant read thermometer in the thickest part to check doneness.

How long should I grill or pan fry these turkey burgers?

For 3/4 to 1 inch patties, cook about 6 to 8 minutes per side. Thicker patties may take 12 to 20 minutes total. Always confirm with a thermometer.

How do I keep turkey burgers from falling apart?

Use the recipe binders: breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan. Chill patties 15 to 30 minutes before cooking. Avoid overmixing the meat. If needed, add one beaten egg for extra binding.

Can I substitute ground chicken or use gluten free breadcrumbs?

Yes. Ground chicken works but can be lean, so add a tablespoon of oil or a higher fat mix for juiciness. Substitute gluten free breadcrumbs or almond flour 1:1 for a gluten free version.

When should I baste with BBQ sauce?

Baste during the last 4 to 5 minutes of cooking. Basting earlier can burn the sugars in the sauce and create a bitter crust.

Can I make these burgers ahead or freeze them?

Raw patties freeze well up to 3 months. Freeze on a tray first, then transfer to a sealed bag. Cooked burgers store in the fridge 3 to 4 days and freeze up to 2 to 3 months.

What toppings and flavor add-ins work best?

Try sliced tomato, avocado, grilled onion, extra BBQ sauce, or cheese like feta, cheddar, or provolone. Fresh chopped basil or cilantro in the mix adds bright flavor.

How should I reheat leftover turkey burgers?

Reheat in a 325°F oven for 8 to 12 minutes covered, or warm gently in a skillet with a splash of water or sauce. Microwave works but can dry the burger, so cover and add moisture.

I wasn’t sure about the smokiness of Mitchell St. seasoning combined with the turkey, but it was delicious! Just the right amount of tangy and salty, good texture.
