Spicy Hot Chocolate Mix

Make a shelf-stable spicy hot chocolate mix. Mix dry ingredients once, then stir 1/3 cup into 1 cup hot water for a cozy drink.

Spicy Hot Chocolate Mix

I like this because all you need to have is hot water. This recipe came from my love of Spiced Cider and Hot Chocolate. I combined the two.

Yield: A lot

  • Combine all dry ingredients in a sealed jar and shake until uniform.
  • Use 1/3 cup of mix per 1 cup hot water; milk makes it richer.
  • Store in a cool, dry place; tweak spice, sweetness, or use dairy-free powders as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make this spicy hot chocolate mix?

Combine all ingredients in a large jar with a tight lid. Shake or stir until evenly mixed. To serve, stir 1/3 cup of the mix into 1 cup hot water until smooth.

How long will the mix stay fresh?

Stored airtight in a cool, dry place, the mix stays good for about 6 months for best flavor. It can last up to 12 months if fully dry and sealed. Discard if you see moisture, clumps, or off smells.

Can I make a dairy-free or vegan version?

Yes. Swap powdered milk and creamer for coconut milk powder, soy milk powder, or another non-dairy powdered creamer. Use a dairy-free instant pudding or omit it. Texture and creaminess may vary.

Can I use milk instead of hot water?

Yes. Hot milk or a mix of milk and water gives a richer, creamier drink. Heat the milk before adding the mix and whisk to dissolve fully.

How do I prevent lumps when mixing?

Sift cocoa and any clumpy powders first. Shake the jar well. For a single cup, make a small paste with a tablespoon of hot water, then add the rest of the water while stirring or whisking. A milk frother or blender also helps.

How can I adjust the spice or sweetness?

Reduce or increase the apple pie spice to change spice level. Add a pinch of cayenne or ground chili for heat. Change powdered sugar amount or add a sweetener to taste.

How do I scale the recipe or make it for gifts?

Scale the ingredient quantities up or down in the same ratios. Pack in airtight jars, label with serving instructions and best-by date, and include a note to store in a cool, dry place.
