Hot Cocoa Muddy Buddies

Easy hot cocoa muddy buddies with chocolate-coated cereal, powdered cocoa dusting, and marshmallows. No-bake snack ready in minutes.

Hot Cocoa Muddy Buddies
This delectable dessert snack makes good use of The Spice House's classic hot cocoa mix.

Submitted by: Lonnie R. from San Diego, CA
Yield: 8 Servings

  • Coat corn flakes and mini wheats in melted chocolate, then toss with powdered sugar and hot cocoa mix for a chocolaty snack.
  • Use a microwave or double boiler to melt chocolate, spread cereal on a sheet to cool, then shake with the powdered mix and marshmallows.
  • Store in an airtight container; add regular marshmallows last to keep them from getting sticky or melt them if using freeze-dried.

Preparation Instructions:

Place cereal in a large mixing bowl

In a microwave-safe dish, combine chocolate chips and oil. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until melted and smooth. (If you don’t have a microwave you can do the same with a double boil. I prefer the double boiler).

Pour chocolate over cereal and gently stir with a spatula, until all of the pieces are coated.

Place cereal mixture on a lager baking sheet and let dry.

In a Ziplock bag add the powder sugar and Spice House cocoa classic. Add the coated cereal mixture and marshmallows. Shake off excess powder and serve immediately.

More About This Recipe

I prefer melted dark chocolate. I find it makes the overall flavor not too sweet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different cereals instead of corn flakes and mini wheats?

Yes. Swap in Rice Chex, Corn Chex, Bran flakes, or similar crunchy cereals. Pick cereals that hold up to coating. If you need gluten free, choose cereals labeled gluten free since mini wheats contain wheat.

How do I melt chocolate without a microwave?

Use a double boiler. Put a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water and stir the chocolate until smooth. Add about 1 teaspoon of oil to thin it if needed, and keep the heat low so the chocolate does not seize.

Can I use dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate?

Yes. Dark chocolate makes the snack less sweet and more chocolate forward. You may not need to thin it as much, but add a little oil if the melted chocolate is too thick to coat the cereal evenly.

Should I use freeze-dried or regular marshmallows?

Freeze-dried marshmallows stay light and crunchy in the mix. If you use regular mini marshmallows, add them after the cereal has cooled and been dusted so they do not melt or become sticky.

How long will muddy buddies stay fresh and how should I store them?

Store in an airtight container at room temperature. Best texture is 3 to 5 days. They will keep up to 2 weeks but may soften. For longer storage, freeze in a sealed bag for up to one month. If you added regular marshmallows, expect quicker texture changes.

Can I make this recipe gluten free or nut free?

For gluten free, use cereals and cocoa mixes labeled gluten free. The recipe itself has no nuts, but check chocolate chips and cocoa mix labels for cross contamination if you need nut free.

How do I get an even chocolate coating without clumps?

Gently fold melted chocolate into the cereal in a large bowl so pieces are evenly covered. Spread the coated cereal in a single layer on a baking sheet to cool. Then place cooled pieces into a zip bag with the powdered sugar and cocoa mix and shake briefly to coat evenly.

Can I make this ahead for a party or scale the recipe?

Yes. Multiply ingredients evenly for larger batches. You can make up to a day ahead. Keep marshmallows separate and add them right before serving if you want the best texture.
