Asafoetida Powder

Rated 4.5 out of 5

Also known as Hing, asafoetida is a staple of Northern Indian spice in vegetarian cooking. It has a unique smell and flavor unpleasantly strong while raw but mellow and allium-like when sauteed in ghee. When paired with turmeric, asafoetida powder lends a leek-like flavor to dhal soup and potato, lemon rice, or cauliflower dishes.

Details

Asafoetida powder is often called for in Indian cooking recipes, primarily in dishes with legumes and vegetables like cauliflower. While on its own the smell may strike you as overpowering, it mellows out during cooking and produces a flavor similar to onion and garlic. In India this hing spice and asafoetida recipes are crucial for the Jains, who do not eat root crops. Ingredients: gum arabic, wheat starch, asafoetida.

Great for People you can't eat Garlic or Onions

Doctors orders are to quit eating garlic and onions (among other things).

I finally found something that mimics the flavor of garlic (you must cook it so no pesto). It helps to keep cooking some of my favorite dishes and keep the same flavor.

Read recommendations

recommended from a friend and glad I read recommendations from SH! Wonderful with turmeric in a curried cauliflower with honey! There is a strong smell but mellowed and pleasant after cooking.
