Sesame is the world's oldest oil producing plant. Sesame oil is rich in healthy polyunsaturated fatty acids. Used in both savory and sweet recipes, sesame seeds are delicious in salads, toppings, stir-fries, and baked goods in many cuisines. In Africa, sesame seeds are also known as "benne" seeds and are sometimes written as such in Southern cookbooks.
