Mustard Barbecue Sauce

Bold mustard barbecue sauce with balsamic, brown sugar, and cayenne. Simmer 20 minutes. Great on pulled pork or Cajun links.

Mustard Barbecue Sauce
Not quite Carolina-style barbecue space, but certainly inspired. Try this over pulled pork or as a condiment for cajun hot links.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I serve this mustard barbecue sauce with?

It pairs well with pulled pork, Cajun hot links, grilled chicken, sausages, and burgers. Use it as a glaze, sandwich spread, or dipping sauce.

Can I use prepared yellow mustard instead of mustard powder?

Yes. Prepared mustard already contains liquid and seasoning, so start with about 1 cup prepared mustard and cut the vinegar to 2 to 3 tablespoons. Taste and adjust sweetness and acid before simmering.

How do I make the sauce less spicy or more spicy?

To reduce heat, cut the cayenne or omit it. To increase spice, add more cayenne, a pinch of hot paprika, or a few drops of hot sauce. Adjust in small steps and taste.

My sauce is too thick. How do I thin it?

Warm the sauce gently and whisk in small amounts of warm water, stock, more vinegar, or lemon juice until you reach the desired consistency.

How long will this sauce keep and how should I store it?

Cool it, transfer to an airtight jar, and refrigerate for up to 3 weeks. For longer storage, freeze in portions for up to 3 months. Thaw and stir or warm before use.

Can I make this sauce dairy free or vegan?

Yes. Replace the butter with a neutral oil like vegetable or canola oil, or use vegan butter. The rest of the ingredients are plant based. Check brown sugar if strict vegan.

Any tips to prevent burning while simmering?

Use a heavy-bottomed pan, keep heat low, and stir frequently. If it starts to stick, add a splash of water or vinegar and reduce heat further.

How can I make the sauce more like Carolina mustard barbecue?

Switch balsamic to apple cider vinegar and use more yellow mustard flavor. Increase vinegar slightly and reduce brown sugar for a tangier, sharper profile.
