Summer Savory

Global Flavor
Pantry Staple
Made in USA

Summer Savory grows in rich, light soil, and its seeds are very slow to germinate. Its woody, thyme-like richness is an essential flavor in many dishes, including Romanian sarmale cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and minced meat.

Details

This is the most popular herb for beans and peas, giving rise to the German title of bohnenkraut, or "bean herb." Summer Savory can be used instead of sage in poultry stuffing, and is often found in sausage-making recipes. It's also a pleasing herb in soup. As with all herbs, summer savory is lightweight while being high in volume. For example, the 4 oz. size will fill a quart-sized plastic bag, while the 8 oz. portion will fill a gallon-size bag. We’ve found that most people only need a jar or a 1 oz. size package. Ingredients: Savory.

As good as Spice Island

My family has been using Spice Islands Summer Savory for over 60 years for one recipe out of their cookbook. I recently found out that Spice Islands is no longer producing their Summer Savory so I had to find a new source. I found The Spice House online and read the description of their Summer Savory and it sounded like it might work so I ordered several bottles. Once it arrived, I made the recipe, which is a cheese mix, and it tasted just like we’ve been making it for 60 years. I am so happy to have found a fantastic replacement product and am now sharing it with friends and family who make the same recipe. thanks to The Spice House, we can continue our long tradition with one of our favorite recipes.

Glad to find this again!

I first became familiar with using savory years ago while participating as Revolutionary War era historic interpreter and several of the recipes for camp cooking included savory as a seasoning. Like many others, I found it difficult to locate at local stores and was delighted to find it at Spice House. It adds a definitive "héritage" taste to soups, stews and gravies.
