Charnushka is a flavorful black seed typically used in Jewish rye bread and flatbreads, and also in certain savory pastries and cheeses. Charnushka is often mixed together with other seeds, such as mustard, fennel, cumin, and fenugreek, to create a blend popular in Bengali beans and veggie dishes known as panch phoron. Nigella sativa is commonly found as an ingredient in curry and garam masala recipes from India, where it is known as Kolonji.

Charnushka Seeds

Charnushka seeds provide a flavor that is hard to describe. Great for flavoring plain white bread. It adds a nice touch to ordinary bread. Caution should be considered with the amount that is used. The flavor seems to intensify after the first night’s rest. I would recommend it for bread, crackers, homemade cheese (like mozzarella). I haven’t tried it on anything else

Tasty and Healthy

Add to green beans before roasting in the oven. This is a spice for both flavor and health. Health benefits are greater when the spice is heated. A subtle flavor but easily detected on the palate. Once charnuska seeds are in your pantry, you will search for more recipes to use them!
