Cream of Tartar

Cream of Tartar

True cream of tartar starts out as crust on wine casks. It is the precipitate of the tartaric acid in grapes. Mixed 2:1 with baking soda, it forms baking powder. On its own, cream of tartar is essential for stiffening egg whites for meringue.

Details

Cream of tartar helps meringues for pies and other baked goods maintain fluffiness. You can create your own baking powder by combining ¼ teaspoon baking soda and ½ teaspoon cream of tartar, and it’s also good for cleaning copper cookware - just mix it with water to make a paste and rub onto your pots and pans. If you’re a kindergarten teacher or have small kids at home, you can also use our cream of tartar to create your own homemade play dough.
